Choosing a headshot photographer is a difficult decision. For that reason I recommend that actors meet with potential photographers before they decide who to shoot with. The chemistry between photographer and actor is a special and important element to the shoot and should not be left to chance. It's also important to define what you are looking for in your shots so I can tailor the shoot to your needs. A headshot should be unique to you, not the photographer. In other words, I want people to pick up your headshot and say: "Wow, you look great. Who shot that?" Not: "Oh, you shot with Hank Jeffries, you look great."

Photography is a craft that found me. A number of years ago a friend came to me with his parents camera and asked me to take some headshots of him. He was a few years out of school and in need of some new shots. But as a working regional actor he wasn't exactly overflowing with cash. Right away I asked him why he was coming to me with this since I had never taken headshots before. He answered: "because you're smart and you have good taste. And besides, you're my best friend and I can't ask anyone else to stand around and stare at my face for a couple hours."

As it turned out, the shots came out well and before I knew it, friends and friends of friends were asking to shoot with me. A few cameras and a lot of learning later, I've picked up the tools needed to compliment the raw talent I had. But through all the acquired skill and technology I've worked to keep what worked best in those first shoots: We had fun and we were honest.
